Dear AANP Nurse Practitioner Organization (NPO) Representatives,

Currently, federal employees can select a nurse practitioner (NP) as their health care provider under the Federal Employees Health Benefits Program, and the majority of states authorize NPs to provide a diagnosis and oversee the treatment for a workplace related injury. However, contrary to the workers’ compensation process in most states, the Federal Employees’ Compensation Act (FECA) requires that only a physician can make the diagnosis, certify the injury and extent of the disability and oversee the patient’s treatment and care. This barrier places an additional burden on the nearly 2 million federal employees, depriving them from receiving health care from their provider of choice as well as hindering timely access and continuity of care.

During the 2022 AANP National Conference last week, attendees answered the call to action urging their Senators to take up and pass the bipartisan House-passed legislation, H.R. 6087, the Improving Access to Workers’ Compensation for Injured Federal Workers Act, which would update FECA and authorize NPs to certify federal employees’ job-related injuries and oversee their care while they are in the federal workers’ compensation program.

Today, we ask you as NPO representatives to sign on to this letter expressing your support to the Senate for the passage of H.R. 6087. It is imperative that the Senate hear from NPOs all across the country about the importance of passing this legislation. Please add your organization's name by July 15 at 6 p.m. ET (5 p.m. CT). If you have questions about the letter, please reach out to governmentaffairs@aanp.org.

Please note that this sign on letter is intended for NP organizations. If you are an individual member, please visit the AANP Advocacy Center to register your support for the legislation.

Thank you for your support.
